Hi all,
Please pick up Wendell Berry's 2012 Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities from my desk. The piece is entitled "It All Turns on Affection," and in it Berry (referring to Wallace Stegner) distinguishes between "boomers" and "stickers" as he explores our relationships with land. As you read, contemplate your own relationship to place(s), and be ready to share the connections you may have.
Tomorrow (Friday), I'd like to hear from each of you about your on-line explorations. Have you discovered an area that may be grabbing you? Are you looking for something to do with oceans and fisheries, energy use, land management, responsible business practices, radical environmentalism, legislative successes and failures, agriculture and food production, mining and "clean" coal, green building, eco-literacy in schools, international treaties, etc. etc....? Start identifying topics that can sustain (heh, heh) your interest, and on which you'll become an expert.
Tomorrow, we'll also read a short essay by Aldo Leopold, "Thinking Like a Mountain." I'll bring copies to class.
Do your homework and change your world!
Jay
